Regularly in july the worlds top pyramids experts assemble in Almaty (Kazakhstan) for the Freestyle Pyramids Asia Open.
The Asian Pyramids Committee and the Kazakh Billiard Sports Federation this year documented 104 entries from 12 nations: Besides 47 Kazakh players in Kazakhstan's largest city also represented are 4 players from Belarus, 3 from Azerbaijan, 1 from China, 2 from Georgia, 3 from India, 1 from Germany, 11 from Kyrgyzstan, 1 from Pakistan, 22 from Russia, 5 from Uzbekistan and 4 from the Ukraine.
At the Palace Of The Republic and the Billiard Club 'Bastau' yesterday began the group matches: 4 groups, double-elimination, and the best 16 of each group did qualify for the first knock out round (64).
The German-American Dieter Johns made for the first surprise as he defeated Suchredit Chazhimov (Uzbekistan) 5-1 in last 64 and so reached the last 32 round. By then all other Pyramids "exotics" had to yield to strong opponents from the leading Pyramids nations.
In the first knock out round also some prominent victims had to clear the field. Pavel Mechovov (Russia) lost to Igor Kupava (Belarus) 2-5, Azerbaijan's Kanuibek Saguinbaev was defeated 0-5 by Alichan Karaneyev (Kazakhstan) and 2 times Asia Open Champion Yaroslav Vinokour (Ukraine) was beaten 2-5 by Yevgeniy Kurta (Belarus).
After todays last 32 round tomorrow will be started the last 16 (best of 9 sets, up to 8) and quarters. The final will begin on sunday, 14:00 Kazakh time.
Altogether 25.000 USD the organising committee will prorate til place 32, the winner will earn 5.000 USD.
