This title was overdue: The last 2 decades' most successful 14.1 player captures in East Brunswick (USA) the 2007 Straight Pool World Championship crown.
It seems almost incredible that at the 67th edition of the event this was Germany's Oliver Ortmann first 14.1 world title. What made him do that?
After his first 2 Straight Pool European titles 1987 and 1989 in the same year one occurrence catapulted him also into the American spotlight, the home of 14.1 game: As the first non American he won the US Open 14.1. Some years later, in 1993, he repeated his victory - after he captured his third European title in 1990.
But in terms of World Championships Ortmann had bad luck: After 65 editions in 1990 for the time being were held the last event.
Indeed this wasn't a bargain as to his 14.1 account, but in the next years Ortmann was far from not successful. Besides by now combined nearly 70 German and European titles in all Pool categories he won the 1995 World 9-Ball Championship, the 1997 and 2000 International Challenge Of Champions (9-Ball) and was several times Europe's captain at the Mosconi Team Cup USA vs Europe.
After last year's WC 14.1 reissue (Ortmann finished as 17th, compatriot Thorsten Hohmann captured the crown) this year at Hilton, East Brunswick on july 9-14 Ortmann's time had come. From his group stage he came off as winner, overcame Miko Balasz (Hungary) 150-35 in his first stage 2 round, but then firstly lost his match against Nick van den Berg (Holland). But a 150-95 against US monument Tony Robles in the double elimination stage 2 brought back him into the spot.
He defeated Poland's Jaroslav Babica in last 16 stage and played the event's most impressive match in the quarters: Just 2 breaks he required for 200 balls against Philippine's hope Dennis Orcollo (200-7). After his victory in the semi (200-123 vs Danny Harriman, USA) in the final he was eyeball to eyeball with another Hollander, Huidji See. Often he had to catch up, but at the end Ortmann overcame See with 200-171 and earned 12.500 USD prize money.
In 1989 Oliver Ortmann as the first European did challenge the US 14.1 dominance - 18 years later he finally has received - as the 2007 World Straight Pool Champion.
