Monday, 23 July, 2007

On the winners board of the Asia Open crown has been engraved another name, for the third time a Russian.

semis:

Kanuibek Saguinduikov not for nothing has been referred to as one of the favourites. 3 times he made it into the final in Asia Open history so far. After the Kazakh dropped out on saturday Alexander Palamar (Russia) should have been considered as the top favourite. But in the semis compatriot Pavel Kousmin waited for him, which this year kept drawing attention by his win at the prestigious Longoni Cup in Saint Petersburg some weeks ago. Firstly Palamar came to the fore with an 8-0. but Kousmin clinched the 2nd set with 8-7 as well as the following 3 sets (8-2,8-5,8-0). Palamar then did counterattack with 8-2 and 8-5, but with 8-0 in the 8th set Pavel Kousmin decided the match and took a final spot.

In the other semi another Russian, Vladimir Vinetswayg met Saguinduikov's compatriot Anatoliy Shewtshenko. Only the second set went to the Kazakh (8-7), so Vinetswayg with a convincing 5-1 took the second final spot.

final (best of 13):

After the first set went to Vinetswayg (8-1) Kousmin won four sets in a row (8-2,8-6,8-1,8-4). But Vinetswayg didn't throw in the towel, an 8-2 and 8-2 were his answer. Thereafter was following an exchange of blows: Kousmin won the 8th set (8-0), Vinetswayg the 9th (8-7), Kousmin the 10th (8-1) and Vinetswayg the 11th (8-4).

When Vinetswayg also took the 12th set (8-0) since 1-1 he was on a level with Kousmin again, and the last set had to decide the match.
And the fight for the Asia Open crown went to a thriller. Only the last potted ball decided who would take the cup. Vinetswayg made it and won the deciding set with 8-7.

Russia's Vladimir Vinetswayg - the 2007 Asia Open Champion.
