Last year he was a pupil, this year this year he's the junior champion - Germany's Nico Wehner captures the EPBF European Youth 8-Ball crown.
The National Junior Championships in April weren't his event. After National U16 and European Pupils 8-Ball title in 2006 this year in Bad Wildungen he started in U18 section for the first time - and had to content hisself with 8-Ball bronze and fifth places in 9-Ball and Straight Pool. But the National Association counted on him again as anyway he has been nominated for 8-Ball and Straight Pool at this year's European Youth Championships, Sauerland Stern Hotel, Willingen (Germany), august 11-18.
As usual the EYC began with the 14/1 competitions, where Nico reached the knock out rounds. In the quarters he beat Austria's Maximilian Lechner and defeated Mariusz Skoneczny (Poland, bronze pupils 2005 & 2006) in the semis. His opponent in the final: Austria's Albin Ouschan, brother of Jasmin Ouschan and 3 times European Pupils 14/1 Champion since 2002. Nico opened the match and just 3 balls of Albin followed. The German then made an outstanding 82, but the Austrian with his second visit at the table made the necessary 97 balls in a row and clinched his 4th European 14/1 Youth title.
Albin's compatriot Sabrina Naverschnig did it to him directly in girls section. In the final she beat defending champion Anja Wagner (Germany).
The pupils title went to 13 years old Manuel Ederer. The German defeated Poland's Bartosz Rozwadowski 75-55.
With the next competition - 8-Ball - began Nico's favourite discipline. Again he overcame the double elimination rounds without a loss and reached the knock out final rounds. At first he beat Finland's Kari Laine 7-5, before afterwards he met again Maximilian Lechner (Austria) in the quarters. A clearly 7-1 did send him to the semis. Another 7-1 vs Danny Wijnans (Holland) earned him his second final spot. In the other semi met 2 Ukrainian champions: 14/1 champion Artem Koshevoy was eyeball to eyeball with 9-Ball champion Yevgenij Novosad. Yevgenij with 7-3 stood up to his compatriot.
In the best of 13 final at first Nico gained a promising 3-0 lead. After another point to his account Yevgenij had the break, The Ukrainian ran the rack, but then missed the 8-ball. The German took the rack home, so his lead was stretched to 5-0. Nico broke and the rack didn't fall into a difficult layout. He ran the game out: 6-0. Now Yevgenij broke, but no ball found his way into the pockets. The German, near the target now, then made an error. Novosad brought the game home: 6-1. Again Wehner made no ball on the next break, so the Ukrainian had the chance to trail again. But again he made an error, what brought Nico back to the table. A difficult layout, but not inseparably. The German ran the game out and so captured another European 8-Ball title.
In girls section Rachelle Meyer (Luxembourg) beat Kim Witzel (Germany) in the final, Belgium's Stephen Lammens won the pupils tournament by 6-5 win against Roman Pruhai from Russia.
From today til saturday on the programme: the Team final rounds and 9-Ball competitions.
