Tatyana Melikhova and Artem Moiseyenko triumph in Odessa
The Freestyle Russian Pyramids tournament on the occasion of Ukraine's independence, which passed in Odessa's 'Solotoi Shar' Club from 22 to 26 August, assembled 117 participants from the Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova.
In the history of this tournament for the first time no Russian player was registered.
When Kiev's Tatyana Melhikova in semis won over Shanny Shmatzhenko she layed the foundation for the title. A narrowly 4-3 sent her to the final where Victoria Ivanova (Kiev) was waiting for her. Ivanova beat in the semis Ternopil Open Champion Yelena Bounos (Belarus) with 4-3 as well.
Similar close run in the best of 9 final: Melhikova came from behind 3-4 and captured the next 2 sets to 5-4 victory.
Melikhova vs Ivanova 0-8,8-5,8-4,6-8,3-8,8-7,2-8,8-7,8-1.
Melikhova earned 900 USD, Ivanova 600, Bounos and Shmatzhenko 350.
Before Artem Moiseyenko met Maxim Lavrinenko (Ukr) in the final he defeated Mazhtakov (Ukr) 5-3 in quarters and Senuik (Ukr) 5-3 in semis. Lavrinenko beat Lisnik (Moldova) 5-1 in quarters and Bedevka (Ukr) 5-1 in the semis.
At first the bo13 final went evenly, but from 2-2 Moiseyenko won 4 sets in a row what brought him a big step forward. The next set went to Lavrinenko, but the current world number 10 from Dnepripetrovsk clinched the 10th set to 7-3 victory.
Lavrinenko vs Moiseyenko 8-6,3-8,8-5,5-8,1-8,7-8,3-8,2-8,8-5,6-8.
3.000 USD went to Moiseyenko, Lavrinenko earned 2.000, Senuik and Bedevka 900.
