BLOMDAHL EXTENDS LEAD

Sunday, 2 September, 2007

At World Cup 3 Cushion Tour Sweden's Torbjörn Blomdahl celebrates 4th victory in 2007.

After Sluiskil (Holland), Manisa (Turkey), Corfu (Greece) and Porto (Portugal) from august 27 - september 1 the world class met again at Sunrise Garden Beach Resort Hotel in Egypt's Hurghada for fifth leg of 2007 Three Cushion World Cup.

Continuing the last months' dramaturgy meant two favourites in Hurghada: On the one hand x-times world champion and world number one Torbjörn Blomdahl, who has won 3 world cup legs in row between november 2006 and april 2007......and on the other hand Frederic Caudron. The Belgian, former world Balkline and 3 Cushion champion and multiple world record holder, can't complain about the last weeks.

After his victory at Corfu leg in june he made a successful America trip in august. At first he won a tournament in Buenos Aires in honour of Osvaldo Berardi, world balkline 71/2 champion 40 years ago. Afterward he and Carom monument Raymond Ceulemans boarded the plane towards New York for the world known annual Sang Lee International Open, the most prestigious 3 Cushion tournament in  the US in honour of Sang Lee's memory, which Caudron at the end could win for the second consecutive year.

In Hurghada Blomdahl at first didn't left that mark as usual. In last 16 Jean-Christophe Roux (France) gave him a lot of trouble, when the Swede narrowly won by a 15-12 in deciding set. In quarters Blomdahl had similar problems. Against Marco Zanetti (Italy) again he saved his win just in the 5th set by a 15-14. In semi the things turned out better for him: Dick Jaspers had to submit to him, 3-1 the Swede overcame Holland's number one.

For Caudron at first it went like clockwork: 3-1 vs Ryuuji Umeda (Jp) in last 32, 3-0 vs Pedro Tabares (Colombia) in last 16 and 3-1 vs compatriot Roland Forthomme in quarters. But his opponent in the semis on august 31 was too strong for the Belgian. Martin Horn, Germany's number one, arrived at the semis by wins over Nikos Polychronopoulos (Greece, last 16) and compatriot Christian Rudolph in the quarters. An impressive 3-1 against Caudron sent the German to the final.

....where he even gained the first set (15-8). But then Blomdahl showed all his strenghts. 15-6, 15-10 and 15-13 in the next three sets brought the 4th World Cup victory this year to him.

Results:

Last 8:
Blomdahl (Swe) vs Zanetti (Ita) 3-2
Jaspers (Hol) vs De Backer (Bel) 3-0
Caudron (Bel) vs Forthomme (Bel) 3-1
Horn (Ger) vs Rudolph (Ger) 3-0

Semis:
Blomdahl vs Jaspers 3-1
Caudron vs Horn 1-3

Final:
Blomdahl vs Horn 3-1

Best match average: Dick Jaspers 3,214 (quarters)
Best general average: Dick Jaspers 2,259
