Wu Chia Ching celebrates first Major win in 2007 at Brunei 9-Ball Invitational, september 7-8

As connoisseurs of Asian Pool scene the Brunei Darussalam Cue Sports Association and His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Deputy Sultan since the premiere of the event in 2004 always had the right touch in compiling a top field and furnishing a great sports event. Besides the fact that concerning an invitation no important Asian Pool nation hasn't been forgotten nearly all which in Asia hit the big time at the Sultanate of Brunei on Borneo Island could be greeted. What made this event to one of the biggest annual 9-Ball invitation tournaments in Asia.

Also the 2007 edition has not been shortened compared to that. After a welcome dinner on september 6 at Orchid Garden Hotel in Berakas on next day the participants attended at the National Indoor Stadium of Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium Complex:

Wu Chia Ching (Chinese Taipei, Double World Champion 2005), Chang Jung Lin (Chinese Taipei, 2007 Guiness 9-Ball Tour Grand Final Champion), reigning Double World Champion Ronnie Alcano (Philippines) and compatriot Dennis Orcollo, Vietnam's Luong Chi Dung, Indonesian Ricky Yang (2006 Indonesia Open Champion) and compatriot Muhammad Zulfikri, Toh Lian Han (Singapore), Lee Chen Man from Hong Kong, 4 Brunei cueists as well as Malaysia's Ibrahim Amir (2004 Thailand Open Champion), compatriot Patrick Ooi and Singapore's Bernard Tey, which therefore have been invited to all editions since 2004.

His Royal Highness was welcomed by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad and members of the organising committee. After some words of the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Dato Paduka Haji Jemat bin Haji Ampal and declaring the event opened, His Royal Highness was introduced to the players.

Format: knock out, first round and quarters up to 9, semis up to 11, final up to 13.

First round: The Brunei cracks are not to be sneezed at, but Alcano's (vs Md Hadie), Chang Jung Lin's (vs Ak Saiful Azi) and Bernard Tey's (vs Md Jhonny Aqil) wins were no surprise. Wu defeated Ooi 9-3, Zulfikri beat Ahmed Taufiq (Brunei) 9-4 and Orcollo stood up to Toh Lian Han 9-4. Yang edged Lee Chen Man out 9-8 and The HRH Crown Prince overcame Amir 9-7.

Quarters: Wu further on paved his way by a 9-6 versus Tey and Orcollo with 9-3 putted Zulfikri in his place. On the other two tables the spectators got to see something sensational when Ricky Yang defeated Ronnie Alcano 9-6 and The Crown Prince in a dramatic fight overcame Chang Jung Lin 9-8. His Royal Highness was down 6-2 at one point. Undeterred, a string of good racks saw' him pull to within two frames at 8-6, and he would go on to win the last four racks and steal the match. So His Royal Highness for the first time in the event's history reached the semi finals what produced thundering applauses by the bystanders.

Semis: At table 1 Wu showed what established him as one of the leading Pool figures of our days. After Orcollo was taking a 9-4 comfortable lead, Wu came back and won seven straight racks to an 11-9 win what sent him after 2006 for the second time to the final.
The Crown Prince would have to beat Ricky Yang to follow suit Wu. But Yang here ended Brunei's hope by a 11-3.

Final: Yang started cautiously allowing Wu to take an early 3-0 lead and some racks later the score board kept 7-12. Now Yang won three racks to 10-12, but in the end it was not enough to erase the deficit In next rack Wu pocketed the 9-ball for the win despite it being in bad position after he put too much bottom-spin on the 8-ball. Wu cheered together with his family which stayed with him at the Indoor Stadium over the event.

His Royal Highness presented the prizes to the winners: Wu Chia Ching received a cheque of US$10,000 and a trophy while runner up Ricky Yang was US$5,000 richer.

After the prize presentation, His Royal Highness consented to receive a $5,000 donation from Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Awang Goh King Chin for the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Billah Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund.
