National Snooker Championships Germany 2007
As customary the 'Kurhaus' in Hesse's health resort Bad Wildungen was the coulisse for this year's German Championships. On 9 days more than 100 players were fighting for medals in 4 categories: Ladies, Men, Masters & Teams.
The first step was made by the ladies and masters. Natascha Niermann and Frank Schroeder as defending champions passed the pre rounds solidly, but then for both the quarters became the crucial point on the way to their next gold medal.
Against Ramona Kirchner, 2005 Champion and bronze medalist 2004, Natascha trailed 0-1 when Ramona in second frame had the chance to enter the semis. But the deciding last black missed the pocket, whereby Natascha came back to the action again. She made the black and snapped up the decider.
Thereafter she dominated her semi and whitewashed Susanne Wolf 3-0 in the final , so Natascha Niermann captured her 8th national snooker title. Bronze went to Monika Meister and Christiane Mommert.
Frank Schroeder's opponent in quarters, Ali Kirim, gave the defending champion a hard time, but at the end Schroeder overcame his opponent 3-2. Like Natascha thereafter in semis (Mark Russell) and final (Norman Caunter) Schroeder didn't lose a frame, what brought him his third national title in a row. The second bronze medal went to Ralf de Vries.
The team fights (3 players, round robin, all matches 1 frame, best of 9 matches, knock out) were dominated by defending champion SC Cologne and multiple champion the years before, Barmer Billardfreunde from Wuppertal. The final between both took just 45 minutes – Wuppertal ( Phil Barnes, Thomas Hein, Patrick Einsle) defeated Cologne 5-0 and recaptured the trophy.
In the run-up to the men's championship 2 of the 40 men's field often were named as the clear favourites: Sascha Lippe and 06/07-MT player Patrick Einsle.
The last years were affected by the fight of two generations, but the third one in Bad Wildungen knocked at the men's door too. Besides German Junior Champion Stefan Kasper 3 further junior players did qualify for this year's men's championship. Florian Muezel, Andreas Voelliger and Paul-Andre Koerbel (all 15 years old) represented that in the coming years the gents won't have time to sit back and relax.
After the pre rounds the view to the last 16 draw showed it: Lippe and Einsle would meet in semis at the latest.
After both were dominating their first two knock out rounds, it came to the match of the championship. In the first 4 frames Lippe always came to the fore, two times Einsle succeeded in closing in on him. The same procedure in decider: Lippe made a 54 and Einsle had to catch up again. With two small breaks Einsle came near to his opponent, but after two tremendous reds of Lippe the score board showed 70-35 before the colours. As Lippe thereafter also made yellow and green, the match was decided.
The other semi between the two team mates Michael Heeger and Olaf Thode (both Ruesselsheim) ended 3-1 in favour of Heeger.
The 48 years old Heeger played great matches til there but couldn't in the final tie in with his performances in the rounds before. After many junior trophies and 2 finals (02, 04) with 4-1 Sascha Lippe captured his first German men's title.
Tournament's highest break: Patrick Einsle 77.
