Back from Groznyy, Kanuibek Saguinbayev and Yevgenyi Stalev at 'X-Time' Saint Petersburg met again - the first 'Splendid Eight' quarter final match was due.
Both hardly had any time to relax when they landed in St.Petersburg. The plane came from Groznyy, Chechnya's capitol, where both were competing in an international tournament in memory of the first Chechen president Achmad Kadyrov. In the final Stalev (vs Alexander Palamar, Ukraine) came back from 1-6 to 7-6 and captured the trophy. The 3rd place was shared and went to Kyrill Annitzhenko (Russia) and Saguinbayev.
Shortly after both left the Pulkovo Airport they stood vis-a-vis again at 'X-Time' where the 'Splendid 8' 2008 edition was kicking off with the first quarter final match.
A 45 seconds shot- and 15 minutes match- clock didn't make the thing easier.
Firstly Stalev began nervously, a lot of errors of the Russian earned Saguinbayev set by set. 8-5, 8-3, 8-0, 8-1 and 8-0 - all frames took not more than 7 minutes.
But similar to the Groznyy final Stalev after this cold shower then fought back. He not only won the next 5 frames (8-0, 8-7, 8-0, 8-2, 8-2) but also played the day's fastest sets: 3min26sec and 3min51 sec.
As it was 5-5 and both weren't far away from the victory a grim fight broke away. After Stalev again made some errors Saguinbayev did benefit from it and took the 11th frame with 8-4.
The 12th set proved to be the longest of the match in which the time limit played to the Kirghiz' hand. Firstly Saguinbayev potted 7 balls but couldn't run the game out as he missed the 8th what Stalev brought back to the table. The Russian made ball by ball, but with the sixth one his series knocked off. The clock kept 14min50sec whereby the match was decided: Even if Saguinbayev would miss the next ball, Stalev wouldn't have enough time to pot 2 balls. But the Kirghiz ended all speculations by potting the necessary 8th ball in the space of 10 seconds.
Kanuibek Saguinbayev now waits for his opponent in semis - the winner of Pashtzhinsky vs Tarnovetzky which will meet on April 15.
