Wednesday, 27 February, 2008

Those who had second thoughts concerning his bright future he disabused on past weekend: In Almaty Alikhan Karaneyev clinched his first men's single world title.

Combined Pyramids rules are simple: Unlike Freestyle only one ball is a cue ball. Like in all other Pyramids versions the object is to make eight points to win the frame. The player gets a point for pocketing any of the (at the beginning) 15 white balls or the cue ball (in-off). After pocketing the cue ball the player has to choose a white ball to be taken off the table. Thereafter he has to place the cue ball inside baulk area and to play the cue ball out of baulk area. In Combined Pyramids are to be found elements of Billiards, 8-Ball, American Bar Pool and of course Pyramids. The game used to be named Moscow Pyramids - in some parts of Russia even to this very day.

A 57 players field on February 22 at Almaty's Celebration Palace 'Bakhtzhisaray' were waiting in the starting blocks for this year's World Championship, including some reigning National Champions like Saguinbayev (Kirghizia), Mydarysov (Kazakhstan) and Tarnovetzky (Ukraine), as well as some usual suspects like Pashtzhinsky (Russia), Palamar (Ukraine), Saguinduikov (Kazakhstan)............
Besides Finland's Markku Kopponen also German-American Dieter Johns and China's Eduard Di Fu showed their faces in Almaty.

Format:
1 - Double elimination bo7 til last 32

Saguinduikov (Kaz) 2-5 Mekhovov / Adamov 3-5 Vinokour

Now in semis Karaneyev had the chance to return the favour after his 4-5 loss to Mydarysov at the Nationals final some weeks ago.
With Mekhovov and Vinokour met 2 former Freestyle World Champions.

Both matches were close-run things: Karaneyev got his revenge as he defeated compatriot Mydarysov 5-3, and Vinokour narrowly overcame Mekhovov 5-4.
So two generations met in the final: 17 year old Alikhan Karaneyev who deemed to be the world's most promising Pyramids youngster - and 33 year old Ukrainian warhorse Yaroslav Vinokour, former World and European as well as Asia Open Champion.

Final:
To be upfront with it - the final was dominated by the youngster. Just in 3rd frame Vinokour came to the fore (4-0) at the beginning, in all other frames the Ukrainian had to respond to his opponent - Vinokour had to play the Karaneyev game.
Both players not often pocketed many balls in a row, the match was characterised by long and exciting safety battles which the Kazakh mostly could leverage at the end.

The results:
8-1, 8-1, 8-4, 8-2, 8-0, 8-5

Alikhan Karaneyev beat Yaroslav Viokour 6-0, captured his first single world championship crown and snatched up 10.000 USD prize money.
Congratulations!
