2008 European Junior Championships, Mayak Club, Kiev: Favourite Yaroslav Tarnovetzky loses to eventual winner in quarters.
As defending champions both Olga Bulgakova (Belarus) and Yaroslav Tarnovetzky (Ukraine) couldn't keep the eventual winners on their way to the crown. Tarnovetzky, anyway world's No13, has been tipped as absolute favourite, but Russia's Sergeyi Pletnev gave him a 5-0 in quarters. Thereby the way was cleared for the Russian and European top ten junior player. In the final he beat Andreyi Glushanin (Belarus) 7-6, what earned him his first Euro title.
18 year old Maria Turtzhina from the Ukraine had to weather only one critical situation in the prelims, when she narrowly won 4-3 against Yelena Kaftanatova from Moldova. Thereafter convincingly she paved the way into the final beating Olga Bulgakova 4-2 in quarters.
