Japan’s Ryuji Umeda and Koji Fumaki qualified into the quarter-finals of the World 3 Cushion National Teams Championship, after Umeda, the Asian Games 3 Cushion Carom gold medalist, beat Nikos Polychronopoulos (Greece) in a match which was dominated by the Japanese duo.

Germany B suffered a similar fate as Greece and was the first team to exit the event in Viersen, also suffering at the hands of the Japanese pair.  Although Germany were 1-0 ahead after the first set in the match against the former champions, it was Umeda, who capitalised in winning points and won the next two sets 15-14 and 15-2.  The draw was not enough to allow Germany to progress.

Similarly, the Spanish pair, made progress into the next round of the championships after beating Sweden B in straight sets, to join Denmark and Sweden A in the quarter finals.

Daniel Sanchez put Spain ahead in their opening match against Austria, beating Andreas Efler 15-14, 15-4, while fellow team mate, Ricardo Garcia went one down in the match to Andreas Horvath, but made a good recovery to win the next two, dumping Austria out of the championships, having only managed a draw in their opening match against Sweden B.

Belgium’s Eddy Lippens and current World Champion Eddy Merckx also look on course to progress into the quarters as they have not lost any sets in their matches.

Mexico’s win against the Czech Republic, means that they only need a draw against Netherlands when the two teams meet.  The pair from the Netherlands will have to win the final and deciding match against Mexico if they are to remain in the Championships.

In their previous match against the Czech Republic, Dick Jaspers, the Dutch legend, easily won his match against Ivo Gasdoz, but it was the Czech number 2, Martin Bohac who caused the upset by winning his match against Raymond Burgman.
