Dick Jaspers, the Flying Dutchman, found his form in Germany to demonstrate his mastery and show why he is one of the games leading players, in the World 3 Cushion Carom National Teams Championship taking place in Viersen.

After only managing to draw against the Czech Republic, Jaspers and fellow compatriot, Raymond Burgman needed to win their match against the Mexican team to progress into the quarter finals.

Guillermo Sosa (Mexico) lead Burgman in both sets, but in the lengthy and often tense match, Burgman not only managed to get level, but went on to win both sets 15-14.  Jaspers opponent, Luis Avila had no chance in the two sets as Jaspers scored with runs of 5 and 7 in respective sets 15-4, 15-11.

Jaspers and Burgman move into the quarter finals match where they meet the up and coming stars Ryuji Umeda and Koji Fumaki from Japan.

Elsewhere the quarter final draw put Germany who beat Korea to meet Turkey, Belgium to play Sweden and Spain to play Denmark.

QUARTER FINALS
Sweden continued to make progress in beating Belgium, and will be hoping to be the first team to take the trophy three times in three years in the events history.

Eddy Merckx could only sit and watch as Sweden’s Torbjörn Blomdahl dominated proceedings and won 12-15, 0-15 and 10-15 in straight sets.  Blomdahl’s team mate Michael Nilsson leading 2-1 when the referee ended the match as Belgium could not improve the set point deficit, crashing the Belgian team out of the championships.

Germany’s Martin Horn and Christian Rudolph knocked out the Turkish pair, Semih Sayginer and Adnan Yüksel, winning on Caromboles, 97-87 with the sets tied at 4-4.

Tonny Carlsen (Denmark) and Daniel Sanchez (Spain) finished their quarter final match level at 2-2, meaning that it was Brian Knudsen’s 3-0 defeat over Ricardo Garcia that put the Danish pair into the semi finals.

The remaining quarter final match saw Netherlands Dick Jaspers and Raymond Burgman put the Japanese duo out of the championships.  Jaspers masterclass display against Ryuji Umeda gave the Dutchmen the upper hand, winning the match 3-1, while on the other table Koji Fumaki beat Burgman 3-1.  Fumaki’s win was not enough to put the Japanese through as the Dutch duo won the match on points difference.

The Semi finals line-up sees the Danish pair taking on Sweden’s Torbjörn Blomdahl and Michael Nilsson, in a repeat of last year’s semi finals match, while Germany’s Martin Horn and Christian Rudolph play Tonny Carlsen and Brian Knudsen from Sweden.
