The late Lee Sang-chun, former president of the Korean Billiard Federation, will be the first Korean to be inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame.
To mark the honour, the BCA will conduct an induction ceremony for Lee into the Hall of Fame for the South Korean expatriate who won numerous championship titles in Korea and America.
Lee, known as the "legend of three-cushion billiards" and referred to as “the Michael Jordan of three cushion billiards”, was fascinated by billiards during his university days at Seoul National University, winning 10 consecutive Korean national titles in three-cushion billiards from 1978 to 1987.
On moving to for New York in 1987, he won 12 consecutive U.S. Billiard Association National Championship titles, became the world number 1 and lifted the world champion title 1992-1993.
Lee also re-wrote the sports history by winning 41 straight games in the finals of U.S. national competitions, beating the previous record of 36 consecutive victories. He subsequently set the world record for the most average hits in a game, totalling 50 points, or 12.5 per inning.
Another highlight of Lee's career was the Busan Asian Games in 2002 wearing the Korean flag and won a silver medal.
In desiring to make billiards more popular in Korea, he took presidency of the Korean Billiard Federation. Sadly, before he could start fulfilling his mission, he died of stomach cancer.
In his memory, the Billiard Congress of America held the first annual Sang Lee International Open in New York last year at a venue Lee owned before he died.
