High flyer Alikhan Karaneyev from Kazakhstan celebrates 3rd big win in 2008 - in Almaty he beat defender in semis and Palamar in the final for Asia Open crown.

42 players from 8 nations plus 38 cueists from Kazakhstan last week were going on a trip to Almaty for the prestigious Asia Pyramids Open, among them 5 of the world's top ten including the leaders Annitzhenko (Rus), Saguinduikov (Kaz) and Palamar (Ukr).

After an undefeated run through the double elimination prelims, Karaneyev reached the quarters by wins over compatriot S.Ginayatov (last 32, 6-4) and D.Bayev (Russia, last 16, 6-2). In the quarters he met compatriot Kanuibek Saguinduikov. Karaneyev went to the fore 3-0 and 5-1, before Saguinduikov captured three frames to 5-4. By an 8-0 thereafter Karaneyev eliminated the reigning world champion with 6-4 what earned him a spot in the semis.....

where he met Russia's Vladimir Vinetswayg. The defending champion till then gave solid performances: M.Kasuimov (Kaz, last 32, 6-3), N.Suikembayev (Kaz, last 16, 6-2) and A.Elyubayev (Kaz, quarters, 6-3). But in the semis he had to watch his opponent winning 6 frames in a row to 6-2.

Alexander Palamar's way to the final was a bumby one, sometimes the Ukrainian also had to look into the abyss. After a 6-0 over A.Konkov (Rus, last 32) he got out of a tight spot in the last 16 round, when he won over I.Mingasitdinov (Kaz) 6-5. In quarters he overcame compatriot Y.Vinokur 6-4, before he met Daniil Bogushevsky in semis. Palamar went to the for 5-2, but the Russian came back and cleared to 5-5. With an 8-4 in the 11th frame Palamar secured a spot in the final.

In the best of 13 final, the Ukrainian at first went to the fore 6-3 whereby he needed just one more frame for the crown. But Karaneyev thereafter dashed all hopes of Palamar by 4 won frames in a row to 7-6.

Final Palamar-Karaneyev:
8-3/2-8/2-8/8-2/8-6/8-1/2-8/8-2/8-6/6-8/6-8/2-8/6-8

With his second consecutive ranking tournament win, 17 year old Alikhan Karaneyev this year for the 3rd time outpaced the whole world class.

Many congratulations!
