Saturday, 30 June, 2007

Reigning Philippine National Pool Champion Lee Vann Corteza settled for third place in the JPBA Nine Ball Festival in Saitama, Japan on june 23-24.

2006 Doha Asian Games 8-ball gold medalist Satoshi Kawabata, who defeated the Davao City-born Corteza in the semi-finals, went on to win the title.

Japan remembers 28-years-old Corteza as he captured the 39th All Japan Championship crown last december at the New Archaic Hotel in Hyogo. Corteza beat in the earlier rounds Finland's Mika Immonen 9-5, Japanese T. Tobo. 9-0 and A. Shiraiwa 9-2, and crushed Pei-Wei Chang of Chinese Taipei 11-3 in the final to win the title what earned him a directly qualification to this year's World 9-Ball Championship in november at Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines.

According to the Negros Billiard Stable Corteza has two tournament schedules after a series of tournaments in Japan: The 4th leg of Guinness 9-Ball Tour on july 15-17 in Singapore and the annual Cebu Open on july 27 to 29 in Cebu City, Philippines.

At the Guinness Asian 9-Ball Tour Corteza needs just 20 points to earn a total of 100 points that would qualify him to the Grand Final in august in Indonesia. He finished second in the first leg at Sultan Hotel in Jakarta and then lost his quarter-finals match in the third leg at Genting Highlands Resort in Malaysia. Corteza ranked 6th along with 2005 World 9-ball champion Wu Chia-Ching of Chinese-Taipei, Malaysia leg runner-up Dharminder Singh Lilly of India and Bernard Tey Choon Kiat of Singapore scored identical 80 points apiece.

Meanwhile, Chang-Jun-Lin of Chinese-Taipei grabs the solo leadership board with 155 points, after winning the Indonesia and Malaysia leg. At second place is ex-world 9-ball champ Chao Fong-Pao of Chinese-Taipei with 120 points, while two-time Asian Games 9-ball gold medalist Yang Ching-Shun of Chinese-Taipei at 3rd place with 105 points including his topping the Taiwan leg tour.

Another Philippine, reigning double world champion Ronato Alcano, and Ricky Yang of Indonesia rank at No.4 and No.5 with 90 points each.

The Grand Final of Guinness 9-Ball Tour will be held on august 31 to september 2 in Bali, Indonesia. The Top 10 players will chase a 70.000 USD purse with the champion pocketing 36.000 USD.
